BIG IDEAS TO CONSIDER:
This year in Modern United States History 1900 – Present, we will study about how America has changed since WWI. Our main goal is to investigate the people, events, and ideas that have transformed America into the modern nation it is today. We will cover a vast array of material –the Progressive Movement, Women's Suffrage, the end of WWI, The Jazz Age, The Great Depression, WWII, the Cold War, life in the 1950’s, the Civil Rights Movement, attitudes during the 1960’s and Vietnam, and 1970’s to the present. Our ultimate goal is to prepare to examine “OUR AMERICAN LIFE” at the end of the year.
In each of these areas of study, it is important for you to keep in mind the following “BIG IDEAS” about American History:
All juniors are required to pass Modern U.S. History for graduation. Juniors should already know what is expected of them in a rich academic environment, the following items should need no further discussion:

The following items are expected of all students to ensure success this year:
COURSE ASSIGNMENTS:
Typically, each unit of study this year will include the following graded assignments:
GRADING POLICY:
Every assignment will be given a point value. In-class work will typically have a value of 5 – 15 points, writing assignments will have a value of 10 – 25 points, class projects / activities will have a value of 15 - 25 points, and evaluations will have up to a value of 50+ points. Class participation's a great way to earn 5-10 points bi-weekly--engage in class discourse every day. All major assignments will be distributed and handed in through eBackpack or through a link located on the class weebly website. Work needs to be completed and turned in on time to get earn full value. Late work will only be accepted due to an excused absence or Guidance request. Students who have been absent will have one week after due date to turn in the assignment on ebackpack.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WILL BE PROVIDED DURING THE COURSE OF THE YEAR REGARDING SPECIFIC ASSIGNMENTS AND ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS.

- People – The history of America is comprised of contributions made by people from various social class levels.
- Change – The continued growth and development of democratic traditions in America are based on change and adaptations made by the government, American citizens and other invested parties.
- Conflict – Domestically and internationally, the United States has been involved in its share of conflicts. As a class, we will research and learn about how these events have shaped the role of the United States in the global economy, humanitarian assistance, and military power.

EXPECTATIONS:
The following items are expected of all students to ensure success this year:
- BE HERE EACH CLASS!!! (You must be here to learn.) ATTENDANCE: You cannot learn if you are not in class!!! Follow the TA attendance policy to earn credit. Refer to the student handbook if you have any questions.
- BE PREPARED FOR CLASS!! (Work is due on the day it is due!)
- BE KIND. BE RESPONSIBLE. BE RESPECTFUL.
- IPADS must be charged prior to class. We will use them every day. We will be using them in a variety of capacities – many of the assignments in class will require utilizing this technology. Save all written work to GoogleDocs. If you do not have your IPAD or use it inappropriately …. It will difficult for you to complete class work. Work missed because you did not bring your IPAD will result in a zero for the day. Phone can not be used in place of IPADs.
- NO PHONES!!! YOU NEED TO USE TECHNOLOGY IN A RESPONSIBLE MANNER IN THIS CLASS – you are expected to bring your Ipad to every class. NO OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN CLASS!!! (Turn cell phones OFF and put them away!) Violation will result in electronic devices turned into the Dean’s Office.
- No food in the classroom and only water for a beverage, unless required for a medical condition.
- Take care of personal needs before class (bathroom, nurse, meetings with other teachers or coaches). Bathroom passes will be limited to one per quarter in case of emergencies. Exceptions for medical reasons or sudden illness only. Use sign out sheet provided in the classroom.
- Students must sign out if called to the Dean’s office, Guidance, or Administration.
- Teacher absence: In the event that I am absent, the assignment and daily lesson will be located on the class weebly website. Be respectful to the substitute.
- Participate daily. Engaging in class discussions, cooperating with peers, and asking questions are the easiest way to be successful in this class. Be a great communicator!
